Bernd Jansons, Visual Artist
Bernd was born in Zeven, Germany but has lived most of his life in Australia. He has degrees in Computer Science and Arts and is a member of the National Association for the Visual Arts. Until recently, Bernd lectured at the University of Western Sydney in computing and design. He has been involved in many aspects of drawing and image creation for many years but more recently has taken up digital art, working primarily with tools such as Paint Shop Pro, ArtRage and PhotoImpact. Although working in a medium that lends itself easily to reproduction, Bernd has decided to adhere to more traditional notions of the original and only one print is ever produced of each of his pieces.
The primary focus of Bernd’s work is the image itself and it’s ability to communicate narrative meanings through the elements of form, texture and colour. Much of his work is abstract to some extent in order to reduce the possibility of the work dictating a single meaning to its observers. Sometimes, he will start from a photographic source, manipulating and moulding the image until insights into possible meanings emerge for him. Then he works towards those meanings. Other times, he will set out with a particular end in mind. In such cases, he normally works from source sketches and drawings which are either created digitally or scanned in from paper. Once captured, these sources are then refined through extensive manipulation until the work itself suggests it is completed.
The next exhibition of Bernd’s work will a solo exhibition entitled “Chaos Theory” at the Inn Gallery, Blackheath from 23 September to 27 October 2007. This will be followed by two exhibitions at the De Havilland Gallery in Wollongong in November and December of this year. Next year in February, Bernd has solo exhibitions at the Archetype Gallery (Liverpool Street, Sydney)and the Red Door Gallery (Summerhill). Online exhibitions of his work can be seen at artwhatson.com, Redbubble and The Saatchi Gallery, London.
