I have been performing my poetry at the Parakeet Cafe in Katoomba since 2000. This is one of my favourite poems.
The Glass Leaf
I try to save coloured leaves each autumn
but, inevitably,
they turn to dust;
russet to dust,
orange to dust,
gold to dust,
and join the fertilising carpet
beneath the vacant branches.
I can’t remember their colours
by mid-winter.
Photos fade with time
but are the closest thing
to recalling my leaves
as they changed from green,
to red, to gold.
Memories have turned to dust.
Then I saw a glass leaf,
enclosing a piece of each colour
within its stiff black veins:
translucent, sparkling,
in parts rough-textured,
in others smooth and even,
just like the leaves
from my Japanese Maples.
My glass leaf will never fade,
will always be vibrant, shiny
and it hangs in the window.
Its large hand shape capturing light
holding it temporarily,
dispersing it into the house.
Leaves and memories turn to dust,
but a glass leaf will never die.
